What To Do When Your Kid Throws Up In The Car

Car Seat Safety Hygiene Tips

Motion sickness results from a conflict between the eye and ear: the inner ears detect that the car is moving, but the eyes– focused within the car– do not. The brain gets mixed signals, and nausea results. If your baby is unhappy when travelling, he may have motion sickness.

There are some signs you could look out for to prevent infant travel sickness.

Travel sickness usually starts with a tummy ache, so if your baby suddenly seems upset and uncomfortable, this could be the reason.

Nausea can cause more saliva to be produced, so your baby may start to dribble more than usual.

Your baby may feel hot but look pale.

Planning your journey carefully will help your baby be a happy traveller.

However, if your baby were to throw up in the car, what can you do?

Step 1: Take your car seat apart. As disgusting as it may be, take pictures of how everything is assembled before you take the seat apart so it will be easier to put it back together later.

Step 2: Remove ALL covers (if possible) and rinse vomit out in the sink. To clean straps and harnesses, use a stain and odour remover to clean the vomit stains. This is great for fabric, straps and other parts that cannot go in the washer.

Step 3: Consult your user's manual that came with your car seat or check the manufacturer's website (they usually have a manual online) to make sure it's safe to wash the cover in the washing machine. DO NOT put it in the dryer. If machine washing is not recommended, you can simply hand wash the cover in your sink or bathtub.

Step 4: Wipe down and sanitize the frame of the car seat. Don't forget to clean the crotch buckle and the chest clip as vomit may be lurking in those places.

Step 5: Once the cover has been dried, put it back on the car seat frame. If you are unsure on how to do this, consult your user’s manual or the manufacturer’s website. Alternatively, this is where the photos you took before could come in handy.

Step 6: Wipe down the inside of your car and clean that car seat mat.

Step 7: Reinstall your car seat.

If these steps seem too overwhelming or time-consuming, you can get us to do it for you. PramWash specializes in baby equipment cleaning and we ensure that your infant car seat is thoroughly cleaned and re-assembled before we hand it back to you.
